Emily andI decided to utilize the month-long Christmas vacation away from Wharton to dosome traveling. We flew to San Francisco on Dec 15 to spend Christmas with herparents. Then on Dec 27, we flew to Bangkok for the beginning of our Contikitrip throughout Southeast Asia/Indochina. The trip is 14 days through Thailand,Cambodia, and Laos - and then we are going to fly to Phuket for 4 days to enjoysnorkeling, beaches, and massages!

Here isour itinerary:

Dec 28 – Fly from San Francisco to Bangkok

Dec 29 – Bangkok, Thailand: Free day to roam around Bangkok. Went to Bahn Bat(where they make the metal bowls for the monks), Wat Pho (with the largestreclining Gold Buddha), Chinatown, got a massage, shopping at Bazaars, and thenoff to the Patpong Market that night.

Dec 30 – Bangkok, Thailand: Canal river tour along the Chao Praya, Royal Palacetour (including Emeral Buddha Temple), massage, and more shopping! That nightwe flew to Chiang Mai.

Dec 31 – Chiang Mai, Thailand: Went to Wat Phra and saw hundreds of locals visitingthe temple before the New Year and were even blessed by a monk. We thenwandered the city visiting numerous Wats/Temples, massage, Thai Cooking Class(SO FUN!), then off to the night market and rooftop bar with the Tour to bringin the New Year in downtown Chiang Mai! Probably the coolest part was lightingone of the lanterns that rise into the sky like a helium balloon! Soincredible! Goodbye 2011 and hello 2012!

Jan 1 – Chiang Rai, Thailand: We left Chiang Mai on a bus tour through the countryside to Chiang Rai. Once inChiang Rai, we visited the traditional hill tribe people, like the Akha,Yao,Lanu and Karen (long-neck peoples) and learned about their culture. Thatnight, a massage and a night market!

Jan 2 and 3 – Laos Mekong River Cruise: We crossed theborder into Laos, and then took a 2-day river boat cruise down the MekongRiver. The scenery was incredible and it was humbling to see the amazing peopleand the modest circumstances that they live in. It was amazing seeing small villages/huts, families fishing and riding in long-tail boats, and relaxing on the river. That afternoon we arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos. We visited a Buddha cave off the river, took a bike ride across town visiting numerous Wats/temples, and then hit the night market and bought some great souvenirs!

Jan 4 - Luang Prabang, Laos: We did an elephant ride through the jungle and rivers for about an hour. Afterwords we fed the elephants bananas and sugar cane. It was awesome - I was even allowed to ride on the elephants head for about 15 min and steer him through the jungle. We then went to a tubing/waterfall area where we hiked and swam.

Jan 5- Luang Praband, Laos: We woke up early to feed the monks. It is interesting, the Monks carry a metal bowl and each morning the local Laos citizens go and give them the food that they will eat that day. Afterwards, we took a bus to the capital of Laos, Vientiane. It is interesting how different Laos and Thailand are - Thailand a huge country with 65 million people, very developed and advanced, and then Communist Laos, only 6 million people, dirt roads, weak infrastructure, and humble circumstances.

Jan 6 - Vang Vieng, Laos - Amazing day today! We woke up early and went hot air-ballooning across Laos. I actually felt comfort in the fact that it was run by a Chinese company! Sunrise over Vang Vieng was amazing! We then rented scooters, drove for about an hour and a half through dirt roads and small towns, and finally found the Blue Lagoon - this beautiful water hole with a rope swing and a cave. Then we went tubing - which is famous among college backpackers! This is like Cancun spring break - with ziplines, rope swings, slides, and a lot of drinking. Actually, it is pretty dangerous, but luckily we weren't drinking! We made it down the river and had a great time!

Jan 7 - Vientiane, Laos - We drove to the capital of Laos, and took a tour of the city. We hit a night market, had dinner, and enjoyed ourselves.

Jan 8 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia - This morning, we flew to Phnom Penh, and took a tour of the S21 prison camp (it was a school that the Khmer Rouge used as a prison). It was very humbling seeing where the 1500 prisoners lived and their photos. Only 6 people survived, and one of the survivors was there that we met. We then took a tour out to the Killing Fields, which has very difficult to see. There were mass grave holes everywhere, and you could see teeth, clothes, and other items that were coming out of the ground. For dinner, we went to a restaurant that is non-profit and helps street kids (it brings them in and teaches them to cook, serve, etc, so they can have skills and find jobs in the future). There, we were able to eat fried Tarantulas - pretty disgusting and chewy, but tasted like chicken.

Jan 9 - Siem Reap, Cambodia - This morning we flew to Siem Reap and went on a tour to the floating village people (Tonle Sap Lake). That night, we went out to the night market and got massages.

Jan 10 - Siem Reap, Cambodia - This was the big day -- we went out early to see sunset over Angkor Wat! It was beyong words- absolutely stunning! We toured the ancient temple, and then visited Angkor Thom, and the Tomb Raider temple. That night, we flew to Phuket, for a few days at the beach!

Jan 11 - Phuket, Thailand - We took a boat tour and sea canoeing in the Phang Nga National Park - going into caves where you had to lie down flat in the canoe because the top of the cave was so close!

Jan 12 - Phuket, Thailand - We took another tour back up to the Phang Nga National Reserve. We went sea kayaking through multiple caves and at night went into a cave that had luminescent algae that would glow in the dark! We saw bat caves, water snakes, and many more creatures. It was a great day!

Jan 13 - Phuket, Thailand - We took a day tour to the Phi Phi Islands. We snorkeled, swam in lagoons, fed monkeys, saw amazing beaches and had an amazing time!

Jan 14 - Beijing, China - We had a 10 hour layover in Beijing, and arrived around 7 am, so we decided to leave the airport and take a tour of Beijing. Unfortunately, it was pretty cold in China, and we only had our Phuket beach gear from Thailand. We were able to buy some warm clothes and hit the town. We went to the Forbidden City, then saw Mao in his mausoleum in Tienanmen Square. We were able to see Temple of Heaven before heading back to the airport. Fly home from Beijing to San Francisco back to the Bobster!

Here is the picture of the piece of glass that has been in my knee for 9 years. The doctors were shocked it was so big, and how it could stay in my knee without getting infected or causing too much damage. The recovery is going really well - off pain meds after 3 days, and walking without crutches 5 days after surgery.

Knee surgery

As most of you know, I had knee surgery 9 years ago when I lived in Kiev, Ukraine. I slipped on the ice, sliced my tendon, and had it sewn up. My knee has hurt on/off over the last 9 years, especially when playing sports or other serious activities. In August, the pain became pretty severe, and I had an X-ray and MRI done, and the doctors realized that there was something still in my knee, a foreign object that the Ukrainian doctors left in there.

I had surgery Friday morning, had great nurses and doctors, and as it turns out, there was a large piece of glass in knee. It is about the size of a guitar pick, and is clearly from a beer bottle that I must have landed on. This experience was considerably different than the surgery 9 years ago: 1) I had a gown to cover myself, 2) I had general anesthesia and was asleep, 3) doctors who were trained, 4) clean instruments and a room to myself, 5) I actually understood what they were saying!

Needless to say, the surgery went really well and I am recovering. I am going to take it easy for the next few days, but should be walking without crutches in a week or something. Hopefully my knee is all better from here on out. Enjoy the pics:

Weekend trip to LA

Emily Bobby and I flew to LA for a weekend retreat with Boston Consulting Group. We stayed at La Terranea Resort on the ocean, and had an amazing weekend. We had a suite that overlooked the ocean, and woke up Saturday morning and saw whales and dolphins swimming. Em and I went coastal fishing, and she caught the most of anyone else on the boat (out of like 40+ people). She caught 2 large red snappers and a smaller fish. I was only able to catch one red snapper - so it is clear that she is the one who brings home the bacon ... er fillet.

We had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed a great weekend!

Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan)

So as part of the Lauder Institute and dual degree program, I got to go to Central Asia to do research with 2 of my classmates, Harrison and Arya. As part of our Master's thesis (or Global Knowledge Lab), we wanted to better understand the major influencers in the region - for both economic and political development. While there, we interviewed business men, academics, politicians, and members of the US Embassy/USAID. It was so fascinating to hear their thoughts about the region and about what is currently taking place. We specifically wanted to see how Russia, China, and the Arabic/Islamic countries were vying for influence in this region. Pretty cool stuff.

We started in Uzbekistan (the capital Tashkent and Samarkand - one of the Silk Road cities), then went to Almaty Kazakhstan, then Bishkek Kyrgyzstan, and then up to Astana Kazakhstan (the capital).

Samarkand was beautiful with all the ancient Islamic sites and blue domes. Incredible! In Tashkent, while negotiating for a taxi, I was suddenly surrounded by about 10 guys and there was a little bit of shoving before I safely got away. While trying to leave the airport to Kazakhstan, I was taken into an interrogation room for about 45 min and was almost not let out of the country because of a misunderstanding of purchased souvenirs and my USD cash position. Chaos!

Kazakhstan was actually the best economically in the region - it was impressive to be there. I ran into the missionaries there - they have just opened up Astana 6 months ago - and I went to a lake with them on their P-day. Of course, when I was trying to fly back to NYC, the airline attendant wanted a cash bribe of $75 to be upgraded to a better seat. Ah the corruption and bribing that goes on! Overall, it was a tremendous experience. Enjoy the pics!

We had a great summer in Dallas, TX. I was interning for Boston Consulting Group and had an absolute blast! Some summer highlights:

We had a great time in Dallas. Emily and Bobby got a lot of pool time, and just enjoyed the summer. I worked pretty long hours, but really liked my team and the work. Bobby began crawling, now has 8 teeth, and began walking a few days ago (just before 10 months). He is sure a handful - but such a happy baby.

Our car had some problems and it felt like the mechanics had the car more than we did over the summer! :( But fortunately it seems like everything worked out. Also, I started having some knee pains, and I went to a specialist who took some X-rays and an MRI and they found out that something has been in my knee for almost 10 years! When I got my right knee operated on in Ukraine (while on my mission), they left something large/sharp in there. So I need knee surgery again to get that out, and probably therapy or surgery to get rid of the chronic patella tendenosis. Yuck!

Lauder Culture Quest Central America

I just completed in an Amazing Race through Central America. Seven countries in two weeks (Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama). This was a Lauder Culture Quest - and actually was 1 credit towards my MA degree. There were 12 teams of 4 students each, and we actually came in 1st place. We were the Mormon Team - officially the Stripling Whartons!! It was a great 2 weeks - but completely exhausting.

The people were so nice and friendly. We loved our time there, and cannot wait to go back.

For Bobby's first Easter, it was amazing that the Easter bunny knew to come and visit our house... and ironically, the Easter bunny knew to fill the basket with Em and my favorite candy, chocolate, and treats. Bobby gets Easter milk, and so I guess someone should eat all this delicious candy!

We had a Wharton LDSSA Easter Egg Hunt with all of our friends. Bobby was really good at spotting all the eggs. We also dyed our own hard-boiled eggs ... and it was obvious that Em is a much better artist than me. We had a great Easter weekend and holiday.

Had a great little trip to Paris and London for a week! We started in Paris – toured Notre Dame then Sainte Chappelle, before strolling along the Champs-Elysees and climbing the Arc de Triomphe. Had a great first day just spending time together and enjoying Paris.

The next morning, we took the Eurostar to London. We were supposed to leave at 7 am, but did not show up early enough to make it through customs/security – but were put on the 8 am.

I LOVED London! Really great city! The first day we went to Buckingham Palace and saw the changing of the guards. We toured the Tower of London, the British Library (saw the Magna Carta) then saw St. Paul’s cathedral and hiked up the dome to get a great view of the city. We finished the day off by strolling from Piccadilly Circus to Trafalgar Square down to Parliament and Westminster/Big Ben. We ate dinner at the original Hard Rock Café (which included a trip to their museum, where I actually got to hold one of Gene Simmon’s Kiss guitars!)

The next day we took a bus tour through Windsor Castle (the main residence of Queen Elizabeth II), then on to Bath – to see the Roman baths, and then finally to Stonehenge! It was an incredible day! Once getting back to London, we went shopping at Harrod’s, went to the Albert and Victoria museum, and then had Fish’n’chips at a local pub!

Our last day in London we did a double decker bus tour, strolled around Notting Hill at the Portobello Market, Abbey Road, Hyde Park/Speaker’s Corner, then went to the British museum (Rosetta Stone), and toured Westminster Abbey. We took the Eurostar back to Paris. We almost wish we had 1 more day in London – because there were a few sites we were unable to see. Overall – it was a great trip!

Our last full-day in Paris, we went to the Louvre, went to Sacre-Coure and walked around Montemartre. We then just walked around Notre Dame and the Latin quarter, had dinner, and went to Trocadero Square to see the Eiffle Tower sparkle! It was a fantastic day! Enjoy the pics below!

Em and I got back from India today, and had the MOST incredible time. We really did love it and had the best experience. Some of the quick highlights and itinerary are:

Taj Mahal - exceeded all expectations! This was larger, whiter, and more intricate than we had ever imagined.

Amber Fort (Jaipur) - this has the Great Wall of India, amazing Fort built on a mountain, and an Elephant ride to the entrance.

Shopping and haggling in the local Indian markets and bazaars

Watching the sunrise over the Taj Mahal from our hotel room

The monkeys, cows, water buffalo, goats, and other animals that roam freely around the country

Tour of the Dharavi slum in Mumbai (a commercial slum that was filmed in Slumdog Millionaire - more below).

Riding the local trains with doors open and hanging out the door to get some fresh air.

Watching a gridlock occur in a Mumbai intersection - everyone driving forward, causing a crazy road block for 30 minutes until the police come to help everyone else.

Driving around India - having the locals wave and smile, seeing the small Tuk Tuk cars full of 10 Indians piled on to 2 seats, seeing the women wear beautifully colored Saris walking down the street or working in the fields, mass chaos on the streets with bicycles, cars, people, etc.

The Indians are so content and accepting of their lot in life (mostly due to Hinduism), and it is inspiring to see them happy in poor circumstances but still working hard.

The Dharavi slum in Mumbai was a life-changing experience. Although probably the worst living conditions in the world (we spent 2 hours walking through small alleys, dirty rooms where 8 people lived, the worst smells, green sewage running through the alleys, and dirty kids playing half clothed). But the most amazing thing was that although these people had nothing, they were content and happy with life. There was no anger or contempt to us or the rest of the world. They instead worked on pottery, recycling plastics, and other jobs, where they worked 10-12 hours per day, 7 days a week, for 150-200 rupees (~$1.5-2 per day). It was bad, but at the same time, they are working and trying to improve their circumstances.
